A bench is the first thing that popped into my head. Pictures would help, for sure!

It would be for the cats to sleep on, of course. Don't you know that we furnish our houses to suit the kitties?what would be the purpose of a bench in that back hallway? I had no answer for that.

Being the furniture lover that I am, I would have no trouble finding a piece of furniture for that spot. Maybe a bookcase or a wardrobe or even a chest of drawers. You could put shelves in a wardrobe and use it like a linen closet.

Convert the existing built-in from shelves into two handy linen or towel drawers. That would be the easiest thing to do, in my opinion.

Or, two doors to close up what's there, then an open shelf unit above? I'd agree with SO, a bench doesn't seem quite right.
