Removing coal stove from fireplace

Post by Rochev »

We just bought a home from 1840. The downstairs already has a wood stove and hot air heat. There is a ghastly coal stove that vents into the chimney and the whole thing takes up a lot of room.

My plan is to remove it completely, and just have the fireplace for looks, or until I can afford an insert.
My concern is- can I just disconnect the vent from inside the fireplace and viola, or will someone need to professionally seal something?

I've never had a fireplace and don't plan to use it, but a wood stove insert may be wanted in the future so I don't want a permanent sealing. Any suggestions?
