Denatured Alcohol removing Trim Stain (help)

Post by saluki42 »

New member here. Forgive me but I have looked everywhere for an answer but cannot find one for an issue I have.

I have a 1908 house and I am trying to revive the trim that has a lot of paint splatters on it. Everything I have read says that you use Denatured Alcohol to take off the paint. I am doing that and it has worked pretty well and I also know that it is taking off the shellac but what I didn't expect was for it to take off the stain.

Am I doing something wrong or is there a different product I should be using for shellac? I was just going to take it off and refinish it. Would mineral spirits work better?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.
