Attic Subfloor Question

Post by Kilian »

I am starting an attic remodeling project. It's doubtful that I'll be able to get a 4x8 sheet of T&G subfloor up the stairs into the attic. I was thinking of cutting the sheets into 4x4 pieces perpendicular to the T&G, so that I can still join the pieces correctly.

Is using 4x4 pieces, alternating the joints every 2 feet, going to provide suitable subfloor strength, or should I consider ripping the sheets into 2x8 pieces? If I go with the longer pieces, I would have to cut a tongue and groove in order to get that benefit.

I plan to put carpet over top of the subfloor panels.

Thoughts? Let me know if I didn't explain my question well enough. Thanks!
