working with terra cotta block in the walls

The previous owner of my house installed a corner tub and shower in the bathroom and then tiled the two surrounding walls. One of the walls is the exterior wall to which he applied the tile directly to the original plaster. Recently some of the grout failed and water intruded the space behind the wall. I am in the process of removing the loose tile and crumbling plaster and then I had planned to install cement board on the walls before putting up Dumawall waterproof panels. The only catch is that this house is not built using wood framing, instead it was constructed with terra cotta block so I can't just screw the cement board to two by fours. Does anyone have any experience with this type of construction? What is the best way to attach the cement board to the wall? Thin set? Construction adhesive? I want to make sure that I don't have any future problems.
