Searching for Architectural Plans - Suggestions?

I have a house that was custom built in 1970 that needs updating and repairs. I am searching for the original architectural plans. Any suggestions on where I can look? Thanks!

The town assessor's office/town hall/town building inspector? I've tried to find the same for my house but fell short, perhaps the folks at your town offices are more competent than mine!
