Bergenia produces pink or white flowers on a tall stalk. The foliage is semi-evergreen and turns purplish during the winter. The plant grows in sun or partial shade but flowers earlier and has better winter foliage color in sun. Bergenia grows 1 foot tall in any good garden soil. The plant is suitable for use in areas with wet soil. As the plants age, the centers of the clumps become bare.
Propagation is by seeds sown in spring, or by division done in spring. Set the crown just below the soil surface when replanting.
