Brassaia - Schefflera, Umbrella Tree

Schefflera can grow to a rather large size. High light intensity is preferred but lower light intensities are tolerated. Shade umbrella tree from direct summer sun and grow it in any good potting soil. Water only when the soil surface has dried out. Any house plant fertilizer may be used according to label directions, but only during the summer. Ideal temperatures are 62 to 65 degrees at night and 80 to 85 degrees during the day.

Propagation is by seed, cuttings and air layering.

Umbrella tree reacts in various ways to cultural problems. Overwatering causes black new growth, leaf yellowing and drop, or downward cupping of the leaves. If the foliage cups upwards, or has pale coloring in the area between the veins, the plant may not be getting enough light. Odema will cause leaf spotting.
