The natal plum may be grown as either a foliage or flowering plant. The plant blooms intermittently with the flowers followed by red fruit. To produce fruit, the flowers must be pollinated by hand or be placed where bees can reach it. Best flowering occurs in high light or full sun. As a foliage plant, moderate light intensity will suffice. Any ordinary soil kept moderately moist will be satisfactory. Ideal temperatures are between 55 and 70 degrees. A dwarf type called 'nana compacta' is available.
Propagation is by stem tip cuttings taken in the fall. Use light green new growth for cuttings.
