Chives grow best in full sun and a well drained soil. Plants are grown from seed or division. Divisions, consisting of 2 to 3 bulbs, are planted 1 foot apart in late March or early April. Seed is sown in spring then thinned to 3 inches apart. Transplant seedlings the following spring. If no other fertilizer was applied, use 2 cups of 5-10-10 per 25 feet of row. Apply the fertilizer in a 1 foot wide band and work it in. Cut off the leaves periodically to keep the plant vigorous. Chives may be potted for use indoors during winter.

Harvest by cutting off the leaves as needed.
