There are many different types of chrysanthemum with many different colors and flower types. They bloom in the fall when few other perennials are flowering. Chrysanthemum prefers a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Mums don't like root competition from other plants. Pinch the new growth each time it gets 6 inches long to increase bloom production. Stop pinching during the first part of July. A winter mulch may be beneficial. The plants are heavy feeders so fertilize during the growing season.

The plants are almost always propagated by division in home garden situations. The time to divide is during the spring.
