Fringed bleeding heart has fern-like foliage and blooms intermittently through the summer. There are several varieties with flowers in shades of red or pink. The plant grows 18 inches tall and tolerates full sun if well watered. This hardy plant prefers a sandy loam enriched with peat. Fringed bleeding heart self seeds to the point of becoming overcrowded.
The plant may be started from seed or division. Divide the roots when the foliage dies down in early autumn. The seed needs to be prechilled 3 to 4 weeks before planting and germinates in 6 weeks.
