These plants look like blue or purple thistles. They grow best in sun and a well-drained or light, sandy soil. The plants are slow to establish and dislike any disturbance once established. Planting may be done in fall or spring. Cut flowers for drying when they are fully open then allow them to dry slowly. There are several types of eryngium.

Propagation is by division, seed or root cuttings, all done in spring.

Eryngium planum Grows to 2 to 3 feet tall and is colored steel blue. It may need some staking.
