Flower Preservatives
Homemade solutions include a teaspoon of chlorine bleach and tablespoon of sugar per gallon of water. Another method is to use a cup of clear, lemon-lime soda per half gallon.
The acid in the bleach and soda slows down bacterial growth. The sugars provide nutrients for continual bloom development.
Aspirin and copper pennies have not been shown to prevent bacterial growth and improve bloom length.
