Helleborus are small and produce white flowers in very early spring. Other types may bloom at different times. They like fertile soil, partial shade and dislike heat, intense sunlight and dividing. The plant is poisonous.
Christmas rose may be divided or started from seed. Division is done in spring or fall but the roots are brittle and easily injured. Starting seed is difficult and slow. The seed are planted as soon as they are ripe. Six weeks of moist chilling is recommended. It may take 3 years from seed to flowering.
