Hyacinths produce fragrant flowers and like a well drained soil and a sunny location. The flowers last longer in partial shade. Hyacinths do not like dry soil and decline fairly rapidly after the first year. A winter mulch is suggested. Plant the bulbs 6 inches deep and 5 to 6 inches apart. In a heavy soil plant 4 to 5 inches deep. In sand increase the planting depth to 7 to 8 inches. The bulbs may be divided when dormant.
