Two young visitors are enthralled by the "Maiden of the Mums."


A magical floral kingdom is the theme of the annual autumn chrysanthemumdisplay at Brookside Gardens Conservatories, a public botanical garden inWheaton, Maryland.

Mums of all sizes, colors and shapes are trained into fanciful forms. Aknight in shining armor confronts a fearsome 40-foot-long topiary dragon. A fair"Maiden of Mums" awaits rescue, perhaps to be swept away to the castleby the waterfall.

Not a mum, but a bird of paradise, which seems to fit well in the fanciful floral kingdom.

The display is free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November26. Upcoming displays include the Garden of Lights, a spectacular half-milewalk-through display of original forms of plants, animals, fountains, colorfulroses, wisteria and other blooms of twinkling lights.
