Liatris produces spikes of unusual, fluffy looking, white or purple flowers. The flowers open first at the top of the spike. Gayfeather grows 4 to 5 feet tall and is best used at the back of the flower garden. The plant grows in any soil but best results are obtained in sandy soil and exposure to full sun or partial shade. Shade grown plants have crooked stems. If not divided enough, the crown grows out of the ground. Flowering occurs from August to September.
Division of the tuberous roots can be done in early spring. The seed germinates in 3 to 4 weeks at 65 to 75 degrees.
