Anise magnolia grows 30 feet tall and has leaves narrower than those of other magnolias. The tree has a pyramidal growth habit and bruised leaves and bark give off a lemon scent. The white flowers are borne in late April and 3 of the 6 petals are longer than the other 3 petals. The early blossoms are often injured by frost. The fruit are rosy pink with scarlet seeds.
One cultivar is listed; 'Else Frye'--fastigiate, flowers 50 percent larger.
