Japanese red pine reaches a height and spread of 30 to 50 feet and turns yellowish during winter. The tree prefers a site with full sun and a well-drained, slightly acid soil. The bark is reddish and peeling.
There a few cultivars: 'Albo-terminata'--yellowish needle tips; 'Aurea'--yellow needles; 'Oculis-draconis'-- Dragon's Eye Pine--2 yellow lines on needles; 'Umbraculifera'--Tanyosho Pine--10 to 12 feet tall.
