ROBINIA INSECTS
ROBINIA INSECTS
Locust borer adults have long antennae and are black with yellow markings. The larvae bore into the the trunks. The trees are fairly tolerant of small populations of borers. Keep trees healthy by fertilizing. Pesticides can be applied to the lower trunk in Spring as leaves are unfolding. Carpenterworm also bores in the trunk and branches of locust. The larvae are white to pink and have brown tubercles. Control carpenterworm by injecting 3 to 4 drops of fingernail polish remover containing ethyl acetate in the the burrows. After placing the chemical in the burrow close the opening with mud or putty.
Scales can be controlled with sprays of Diazinon, Sevin or malathion applied when crawlers are active.
Spider mites cause green leaf color to take on a stippled appearance.
