Although a lilac, this member of the species is quite different in appearance than those with which gardeners are more familiar. This is a very large shrub or small tree, reaching a height and spread of about 20 feet. The tree is hardy to zone 3 and has a medium growth rate. The white flowers borne in early summer are the main ornamental feature. As with other lilacs, the plant may need rejuvenation pruning every few years as it becomes overgrown.
