Trees For Windbreaks

Trees are used to protect rural homes from winter winds. An effective windbreak needs to be 1 and a half times the height of the windbreak away from the house. If placed closer, turbulence created by the windbreak reduces protection provided by the trees. Effective windbreaks consist of several rows of evergreens planted at fairly close spacings. A mature windbreak will block views on the other side of the trees.

Most evergreens are suitable for use on windbreaks but pines or spruce are used most often. Use of a mixture of species is suggested. A uniform stand of one species is more likely to be severely injured by pests.
