The combination of the words "electric" and "fire" may sound like bad news, but this technology can provide a practical solution for old house owners who long for a fire in their old fireplace. The Victorian Fireplace Shop sells electric fireplace inserts which, according to the manufacturer, produce realistic-looking flames and embers.

A distinct advantage of the electric fireplace is the "flame only" setting, which allows you to enjoy the beauty of a heat-less fire in the dog days of summer. Inserts are available in (faux) logs, coal and coal-baskets. No venting is required.
