Fireplaces: Radiating warmth

Reviewed by:
Rosemary Thornton
Firebacks, the decorative cast iron plates lining the rear wall of a firebox, had an important function in the days before central heating. They radiated the fire's warmth into the room and prolonged the life of the firebox. Pennsylvania Firebacks designs and manufactures attractive firebacks in historically-accurate designs from old plates.

In addition to the reproductions, owner James Del Conner creates and manufactures about 35 new designs. Firebacks are available in a wide variety of sizes and styles, but typically measure about 18-inches square and weigh about 40 pounds. The firebacks can be used with wood or gas logs, says Del Conner.
