Block planes are indispensable tools for installing trim and cabinets. Nothing is as useful for adjusting the fit of mitered door and window casings, softening sharp edges and eliminating saw and mill marks from lumber.
Lie-Nielsens Model 102 block plane has a blade set at just 12-1/2 degrees, allowing it to cut end grain more effectively than a standard plane. Its A-2 steel blade is cryogenically treated for long edge life. At just 5-1/4 in. long, it tucks easily in a tool bag or back pocket.
The body of the blade is available in manganese bronze or ductile iron. Prices in September 2004 were $75 for the iron plane, $95 for the bronze.
