Refrigerators: Cool and efficient

Reviewed by:
Rosemary Thornton
The 10.5 cubic foot ConServe Eco-Fridge runs on about $4 a month of electricity -- two-thirds less than the industry average. Some of the energy savings come at the expense of convenience -- the freezer compartment must be manually defrosted. But a well-insulated cabinet and bottom-mount freezer also contribute to the energy efficiency.

Condenser and cooling tubes are built into the cabinet, protecting them from dust and ensuring a quieter operation.

This fridge is 79" tall, 23" wide and 23" deep. Pictured are two refrigerators, side by side in brushed stainless steel. Expect to pay about $1,200 (white), $1,300 for black and $1,400 for stainless steel (shown in photo). Price as shown (for the pair) is approximately $2,800 (November 2004).
