The Vermont Castings line of CFM wood stoves includes this clean-burning catalytic model with a maximum output of 55,000 BTUs per hour. Its Environmental Protection Agency emission rating is a very low 0.80 grams per hour (the manufacturer claims it is the cleanest burning stove ever tested by the EPA).

The 485-lb. cast iron stove will handle 24-in.-long logs that can be loaded from the top or the front. Its combustion chamber is protected by fire brick, and a swing-out ash pan makes cleaning easier. The stove is about 32 in. wide, 24 in. long and 23 in. deep. Its available in black and either blue, brown or sand porcelain enamel. The Defiant cost about $2,000 in October 2004.
