Toilets: Dual-flush water-saver

Dual-flush toilets have proven extremely popular in dry, dusty Australia, but they're just starting to gain favor on this continent. First developed in 1984, this one-piece toilet from Aussie manufacturer Caroma uses the traditional 1.6 gallons per flush for solids and a water-saving .8 gallons for liquids.

The trap has a 4" throughway, almost double the size of conventional toilets. Price is about $780 and in some cases, you may qualify for a small rebate ($50 or less) from participating utility companies.
