have you tries a heat gun? if the original finish was varnished or shellacked, paint should come off easily. Painted, not so much... bathrooms of that era almost always had painted trim.

what about trying to match the background color of the border? That might look like it was never changed then. The other suggestion would be to put up a thin moulding where you want the break to be and painting below it. A soft grey would be nice... what is the room's purpose?

Funny you should mention it... The color is called grasscloth and is by Behr. The sun room is a lighter green. I will have to see if I can find the name. I guess I should have typed a disclaimer at the beginning of this. I am restoring my old windows at my house. I was outraged to find this article here on OHW so I posted it. shouldn't we on this site be encouraging preservation? the tone of the article is decidedly pro-vinyl.
