Looks nice! We also have a bunch of painted trim - except ours is either walnut or mahogany (according to a furniture refinisher who was drooling over the house a couple of months ago).

I love the remote compressor idea - put the noisy component away from the living space. I wonder if they still make them like that (I'm sure they do for commercial kitchens, at least)...

Could the coal have been for a heating appliance - such as a boiler or coal stove? Our house used to have a coal room, to feed the boiler (the house had hot water radiator heat when built). When a gas boiler was installed - probably quite early, since the house's first owner was a VP at the gas comp...
