Re: Refinishing a floor in a small room.

Wow, really? Dewalt? I'm honestly a bit surprised. Me too. I bought it based on name alone...never again. Peruse the reviews on Amazon. I was certainly not the only to have problems with the stupid things overheating. http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DW433-21-Inch-Variable-Canister/product-reviews/B000...

Re: First old house after college! (pics)

I remember those posts as well...those were some amazing houses! (Please feel free to keep making posts like that!!). And that is a killer deal. Have fun with the place! Obviously structural comes first, but man...she looks like she's begging for some color. Were the stain glass windows on the churc...

Re: Refinishing a floor in a small room.

I just refinished the oak floor in our (I think) 14x16 parlor with a hand belt sander. The floor was in pretty good shape apart from staining, so I didn't think it needed something as extreme as a drum sander. I started with 60 grit, then 120, and then went over it with 150 grit with my random orbit...

Re: What was your most hated project?

I'm with Dan...removing paint is the worst. I've done two rooms now....EACH window/door frame takes me about 25-30 hrs. from start to finish plus about the same for the 14 inch baseboard. The room that I just did had three windows and two doors + baseboard...that's 150 (at MINIMUM) hours of scraping...

What to do...door hinges.

Hello all, Hopefully in the next week or so the doors to our parlor will be put back up...but I'm still undecided about how to finish the cast iron hinges. I want to do something interesting with them, but my desire to be historically accurate supersedes this desire to be unique. So were cast iron f...

Re: Ideas on what this glass piece is?

I'd put my money on it being an old glass insulator. After a brief E-bay search, I found this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Blown-Molded-Industrial-Glass-Radio-Strain-Insulator-Dual-Eye-Hole-/170699199168?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27be7712c0 which is a pretty close match. An ebayer sent the ...

Re: Refinishing Floor: How to get rid of stains?

Downtowndahlgren - I'm not really sure what kind of stains I was trying to remove. After seeing the photo of njsmom's floors, I'm thinking maybe they weren't pee stains...maybe just water stains. With the finish still on, they just looked darkened, there was none of that bleached out look. I hate to...

Re: Refinishing Floor: How to get rid of stains?

Sorry it took a while to post this...life's been busy. But, here are the results of my stain removal experimentation. Alas, there were no 'Eureka!' moments, but the results did surprise me. Like I said, since I had so many stains to choose from, I tested several different 'home remedies'. For round ...

Re: Refinishing Floor: How to get rid of stains?

Well, with the myriad of advice both here and on the interwebs, I'm doing some experimentation. I had plenty of those silver dollar sized spots to choose from, so I applied straight bleach to one, hydrogen peroxide to another, white vinegar to the third, and ammonia to the last. I'll let you know ho...
