what did you get done on your house today?

Postby steponmebbbboom on Tue Apr 03, 2012 11:56 pm

After a fulltime job and another side job in the evening I managed to install an antique push-plate from a commercial door onto my wooden front door frame, to guard the paint from key damage. I used old stock brass countersunks with slot-heads. The finish on the plate matches the entry set. Should help to preserve the finish on the frame after spending a lot of time refinishing it. What did you do?

We layed tile in our bathroom! Well, mostly Mike and his dad did. And I cleaned up the living room.

I seem to be having more and more days of barely getting the mandatory chores done.

On the horizon, though, we are planning a road trip with an itinerary of Texas-based architectural salvage warehouses. We are specifically on the hunt for front porch columns, perhaps door and window hardware, some window sashes for a project on the back service porch, etc. And the big thing I want is an old fashioned farmhouse table plus chairs for the dining room. I really hope we can find some nice 8' columns to replicate the ones removed in the 50's. I really want to find "real" ones (i.e. wood), but if we can't find them, we will have to look at alternatives, such as fiberglass.

Yesterday the carpenter refitted the corbels on the porch and put up the molding all around the inside. I am still waiting for the second front door of which he promised to me within the next month.....

Today I bought a paint sample to freshen up that bathroom downstairs and a kit to darken the cabinets in the bathroom
to black. A friend is going to paint some tole ware style folk art on the doors to make it look more european.

After 6 years of this room looking a mess I have had it.

Scored a 1954 Standard console shelfback wall-hung bathroom sink in ming green complete with lavatory legs at the local ReStore for $60.00. Deabath.com shows several sinks just like this one without lavatory legs for $800 and up plus shipping, so I'm very pleased. It's spotless and just needs the plunger control handle freed-up. I think the main floor bath would be a perfect place to show it off, perhaps as a midcentury powder room.

Today I took the hosta out of the bag, looked at them and decided to plant them tomorrow.

Pqtex's post reminds me that I have to do the same.
