Siding: Cedar siding

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerWestern Red Cedar, when backprimed and protected with a quality finish, can last for decades. Michigan PreStain uses a proprietary staining process that applies stain on all four sides of their Cedar shingles and Cedar siding in a factory-controlled setting.

The stain is applied with a large, rotating brush that pushes the stain into the wood. The lumber is then allowed to dry, wrapped in polywrap and shipped.

According to this company, the cost of prestaining is about half the cost of staining by hand and there are no brush marks, streaking or overspray. Nails, caulk and touch-up stain are provided in matching colors.
