Stair Lifts: Lift Me Up

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerOlder homes with upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms often pose barriers to handicapped and elderly residents.

The StairLift is a nice alternative to costly home elevators.

This lift will move up to 250 pounds at 25 feet per minute. The chair swivels for ease of use. When it's not needed, it folds into a 13" thick space.

The original version of this chair was invented by Inclinator in 1923. It runs on 110 volts and can be hand-operated in the event of a power outage.

  • The StairLift SC costs approximately $4,000 installed on straight stairs (January 2006).
  • Track is 9" wide, chair folds down to 13".
